Ableton sounds bad?
« on: Aug 17, 2011, 17:23 »
This is a big question, I know..

many people think that ableton doesn't reproduce the sound in a good way, bad reproduction algorythm, etc...

Even my teacher (he's also in the Ableton site in the list of Official Trainers) said me that it's a big discussion: does every other daw sound better than ableton?

He also said me that no one demostrated that and he also tryed to use different daws and ableton for a test, but nothing different resulted...

I personally hear a difference, what do ya think?

I hope it's all a scam, because Live is the only Daw I'm capable to use well xD

I have no idea about ableton but I think each daw produces a slightly different sound as I prefer to export my tracks from studio one as I think it sounds slightly warmer than reason.

reason = digital
cubase = warmer etc.

there's always workarounds when mixing down the track or by using vst's.

You mean to produce something with one daw then export it with another one?
So, all I have to do, is to bring all the audio tracks in another daw for the finalization process?

Maybe I've an idea for an experiment =)
But I wanna know more opinions...

a couple of things m8.
if your bouncing out at say 16bit the qulaity will suffer,
try n bounce out at 24 bit.
take a look at presonus studio one.
it has a dedicated "project"/mastering side.
this is where all the magic happens.
m/s eq'ing, summing up, boost compression, yadda yadda blah blah. :)

aye what mark said ... always try to export in wav at least @ 24bit , 44.1.

I meant export as a single file or you could rewire also if you need to master individual channels or alternatively export each track as a wav.

up to you really :)

----

Personally I do all producing, mixing & mastering in reason, then I export as a single wav into studio one so I can edit/cut arrangement or add vst effect then export as another 24bit wav before finally converting to 320k or average/variable 192k mp3 in audacity.

Like I said for some reason the exports from studio one sound warmer to me than reason.

Oh my god I'm not such a Newbie!
I always export at 24 bit depth =)
Anyway I know it's a question of mastering, I just wanna know why people say that Ableton haven't Cubase quality, or similar things

there are other lil tricks as well m8.
like right clicking eq8 and selecting the high quality mode.

you will always get ppl saying logic is better than fls, or ableton sounds dull compared to cubase,
its always the same m8.
but learn how to use eq's properly to raise the game up and then no one will now what your useing.
ps.
best eq out there for windows is part of the ssl duende native pack.
ssl native eq stereo .
go see auntie she has all the goodies :)

This is idd a big one, many people do not know there are several settings turned down in Ableton by default...
Going through all instruments and effects and right clicking them to check for some quality setting would be a good idea, the exception might be the reverb which has the quality drop down on the actual interface...
when you have changed it: dont forget to save it as default preset so it will persist!

also in the settings menu you have a tab "audio". On that tab theres an option "Default SR & Pitch Conversion" which is set at normal by default, clicking it will set it to high quality. (SR = Sample Rate btw)

As for the main question, if you really go search on the audiophile and mastering forums, most people will say it is all a bunch of crap...
The main reason why people say ableton sounds crap is because it is so easy to use, therefore more newbs use it who dont know what they are doing (yet)...
In the end its all about the quality of you samples, instruments and VSTs, the rendering in ableton is not distinguishable from any other major DAW...

personally I find when I use Guitar Rig for example instead of the ableton effects, it sound much and much better....
